From a Bonzo descendant: "I found a xerox copy of the following newspaper article in the Bonzo folder in the family history files of the Portsmouth Public library in Scioto County OH. Unfortunately, the copy did not reference the date or name of the newspaper containing the article. Based on the ages of the subjects, I guess that the artice was published about 1913. The subject is John Bonzo (1838-1915), spouse of Nancy Swaim and son of Jean Gabriel (John G.) Bonzon and Mary Powell." ---
Came to Portsmouth When Scioto County Was "Woods"
"One of the most pleasant events in the life of Joseph Bonzo and family, of 1640 Twelfth street, is a visit from Mr. Bonzo's father, John Bonzo, of Madison township, who has some remarkably interesting stories to tell of the early history of Portsmouth, for he came here when Portsmouth was a city in
name only.
John Bonzo, aged 75 years, was born in Beaver county, Pa. At the age of 8 years he came to this city with his parents and located in Madison township, where he still resides. He owns a fine farm, and is one of the most prosperous farmers in the county. He has a twin sister who lives in Carter county, Ky.
The boat on which his parents came to this city from the Keystone state was fired by wood and a number of days was consumed in the trip.
When he arrived here the present city was nothing but a village, Chillicothe street being the only street. For eighteen miles out to where he lived there was nothing but dense wilderness. There was one hotel here, the Legler House, one wholesale whiskey house run by W. P. Martin, a stove foundry run by John Neill and William Eberhardt. There were no pikes, nothing but dirt roads. The whole Scioto Valley was densely wooded.
Mr. Bonzo has a brother who lives in Madison. He has one other brother, Joseph, who is 82 years of age. Their father came from Switzerland, France, and was four months on the way to this country.
Mr. Bonzo wants to know if there are any twins in the two states that exceed him and his sister in age. They were among the first French who settled Scioto county.
Joseph Bonzo, the son, has in his possession a baby cap that his grandfather wore when a baby in France. Mr. Bonzo prizes the cap highly and it would take a small fortune to buy it."
