From 'The Story of Aunt Emma (Nancy Emily Chapman),' published in a Kentucky newspaper on May 14, 1961:
"...Jacob and Mary fled their home/farm with their newborn son, John, in October of 1862 in the midst of the Civil War, because of Rebel raids in the area. Jacob did not believe in the Southern Cause, and did not want to be forced to serve in the army. They went to Ohio to stay with Mary Jane's grandfather, where they remained for the next five years before returning to their home in Carter County, Kentucky (at the end of the Civil War.)"
Comment on the above story: Mary Jane's grandfather was Pierre Louis, long since dead by 1862. More likely would be her father, Jean Gabriel, or her husband 's grandfather.
One researcher has Jacob and Mary buried in White Gravel Cemetery, Minford, Ohio.
